Fenêtre Records has been sitting in the windowsill and silently observing friends and aquaintances wander freely among open landscapes and deep woods. The result is an atmospheric collection of pieces of music, both short and long, called RUFS. It all started with the idea of compiling a little, beautiful set of MP3s for online release, then evolved into a limited edition CD-R, before finally becoming this fully-fledged release on Audio CD.

Featured is an international cast of artists from Canada, England, France, Japan, Norway, Sweden and the USA – some somewhat veterans of the music business, others at their start of their careers. What they’ve got in common is that they all make spellbinding music.

RUFS sits within the ‘home listening’ category, yet remains quite diverse. It starts off with Beneva vs. Clark Nova's playful mix of laptop folk, glitch and ambient, then Melodium and the new Rune Grammofon signings Opsvik & Jennings serve the listeners two short pieces of melodic structure and gentle beats before bursting out in a frenetic (yet surprisingly kind to the ears) drum solo.

Enavomi blends the odd couple, drum machine and flute(!), to a great effect in his haunting composition, while The Jedson Project proves that lap steel guitar can very well be used in other genres than bluegrass and hawaiian music. Ljudbilden & Piloten brings the listeners on a jolly good ride on the prairie, searching for the majestic buffalos. An acoustic trip with lots of textures and impressions.

Nick Grey, bringing vocals to the music, marks a change in the mood with his epic "Black Paper, Mountain". From here the music gets more dark and abstract. Rigil, combining tinkling piano, clicks and an ambient soundscape, creates the last sight of light, before Svarte Greiner and Andreas Meland cover the atmosphere with rhythmic noise.

Still in the dark, Christophe Bailleau gives an impressive, experimental treatment to Greg Haines' beautiful "Snow Airport", and then Muhr shows his skills with slow-paced minutes of cinematic sounds. One hour after the listener pushed the 'play' button, Yasushi Yoshida closes the album with the nostalgic, piano based "Little Hands".

RUFS is a journey through drones and glitches, ambience and electronics, from the cosy to the creepy, presented in exquisite handmade packaging by Kjersti Solbakken. It's a release for short bus trips, long train adventures, grey days at the cabin in the woods, relaxing evenings at home on the sofa - or simply for sitting in the windowsill observing the world.
